AIMIM’s Akbaruddin Owaisi Assumes Pro-Tem Speaker Role in Telangana Legislative Assembly
Hyderabad: In a significant development, firebrand MLA Akbaruddin Owaisi from AIMIM was sworn in as the Pro-tem Speaker of the Telangana Legislative Assembly at Raj Bhawan in Hyderabad. Telangana Governor Tamilisai Soundararajan presided over the swearing-in ceremony, where Owaisi, invoking the name of Allah, took the oath.
The appointment, made under Article 180 of the Indian Constitution, designates Owaisi to fulfill the duties of the Speaker until a formal election is conducted under Article 178. The Pro-Tem Speaker, a temporary role, is responsible for administering oaths to newly elected House members.
Notably, this marks the second occasion where a member of AIMIM assumes the Pro-Tem Speaker role. However, the BJP, particularly leader T Raja Singh, expressed discontent, calling it unfortunate. Singh remarked, “It is very unfortunate. After Congress formed the government and Revanth Reddy became the CM, Congress’ real face has come to the fore.”
Singh added, “Every time Revanth Reddy used to make a statement that BJP, AIMIM, and BRS are one, but the people of Telangana have known who is with whom… We will not take an oath in front of such a person… We will boycott.”
The swearing-in ceremony was attended by CM Revanth Reddy, former Speaker, former Ministers, and MLAs. Prior to the event, Telangana BJP chief G Kishan Reddy, along with newly elected MLAs, visited the Bhagya Laxmi temple in Charminar to offer prayers.
This development follows Thursday’s oath-taking ceremony where CM Revanth Reddy and 12 MLAs assumed ministerial roles in the Telangana cabinet. The political landscape in Telangana continues to evolve with AIMIM’s prominent role in the legislative proceedings.
